SPLUGA PASS, ROAD – SS36, ROUTE BETWEEN ITALY AND SWITZERLAND

Not far from the border with Italy is the road on which the Romans arrived before the motorcyclists. Not for tourism.

To put it simply, there were deposits of gold on the Spluga pass. The once inaccessible mountain area first became a track for mules, and today it is one of the most beautiful motorcycle routes in Europe. And how not to find out, if not on a motorcycle, of course?

Our tour starts from the town of Chiavenna, where we stop at one of the coffee and sweet croissant in bars.

But before we got to Chiavenna, we still went to see the picturesque Aquafraggia waterfall in Piuro. It is about 27 metres high, and the water in the waterfall originates in the Swiss Alps.

After coffee and croissant, the next point is the town of Montespluga, where we stop at the alpine lake of the same name, located at an altitude of 1908 m above sea level.

There is a dam on the lake, which in addition to its flood and energy function is also a tourist attraction.

Montespluga is the last Italian town before the “climb” to the Spluga pass, which marks the Italian-Swiss border.

The Spluga Pass, was built between 1821 and 1823 in difficult conditions and in fact the road is not easy to drive. It has many bends and deviations with a slope of up to 10%

The SS36 road is closed from November to May due to heavy snowfall. The entrance to the pass is free. There is a ban on vehicles weighing more than 18 tons and wider than 2.3 metres.

Thanks to the opening of the easier San Bernardino and San Gottardo passes in Switzerland, the Spluga pass has now become less popular.

Since Switzerland is a non-EU country, there is a border post on the border with Switzerland, but the controls are mild or none at all, given the limited traffic.

The climate on the Spluga pass is cool all year round. The warmest months are from July to September, and the maximum temperature reaches 15°C.

After Spluga we started to discover another gem of Switzerland, but about you in the next account, which we already encourage you to read.
